LGBTQ+ is the abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning or queer and more. These terms are used when describing a person's sexuality, gender or identity.
Everyone has the right to be accepted and live in an inclusive society. Our identity is part of our sense of self, having a sense of identity and being seen (and accepted) for who we are is important for wellbeing and resilience.
If your child is struggling with their identity, it can be a confusing and stressful time for them. They may feel pressure to know their exact identity which can cause anxiety and distress. You may have to have conversations that are uncomfortable for you both, so it’s important to:
- Listen and empathise
- Remain calm
- Make sure they are safe
Some children and young people may be unable to or feel unsafe to express their identity to others including family. If you, or a family member are from the LGBTQ+ Community you may find these websites or support lines helpful.
